How to Measure Your Home for a Folding Mobility Scooter

A scooter can fold neatly and still be awkward to use at home. The route from the front door to the storage or charging area may include a narrow opening, a sharp turn, a raised threshold, furniture, or too little room to park and transfer comfortably.

Start with the complete route

Walk the route the scooter would actually use: exterior path, entrance, hallway, main room, storage location, and charging point. If the scooter will also enter a bedroom, bathroom, elevator, or vehicle-loading area, include those separately.

Mark each change in direction and every object that reduces usable space. A nominal room width is less important than the narrowest clear path after door handles, trim, radiators, furniture, rugs, and stored items are considered.

Measure clear doorway width correctly

Open the door to the position it normally reaches. Measure the clear opening at the narrowest usable point, not from one side of the frame to the other. A hinged door, handle, closer, or thick trim can reduce the space that is actually available.

Test hallway turns as a shape, not a single width

A straight hallway width does not describe a 90-degree turn. Measure both corridor legs and the open floor area at the corner. Include baseboards, furniture, and doors that may open into the maneuvering space.

Check parking and folding space

Combine home fit with transport fit

Home measurements answer a different question from loading a scooter into a car.
